Articles
By Mark Wielebnowski, MYSA Coach Education Staff & Sting Soccer Club, Director of Coaching & Player Development. For MYSA Soccer Times. US Soccer National Audit Course - Home Depot Center; Carson, CA. January 3-9, 2009 For soccer coaches wishing to maintain their USSF 'A' National Coaching License, it is important that qualified coaches stay current with the latest National and International player development programs and team training methods. The US Soccer National "A" Audit Course is an avenue to accumulate eight continuing education credits within a four year cycle. Our US Staff instructors, Jay Hoffman and Rene Miramontes had a very busy schedule lined up which was to include guest speakers, course lectures and training observations of the US Men's National Team training sessions. The forty eight audit candidates were a mixture of Club DOC's, College Head & Assistant Coaches, clinicians, former pro players and educators. During the next six sunny days we would exchange experiences, ideas, be involved in group presentations and small break out groups analyzing soccer trends and training methods. Here is a list of the impressive guest speakers that contributed to the Audit course. Mike Haas - Women's World Cup China 2007, Team Scouting. Mike Matkovitch - New U18 Men's National Team Coach. Bruce Arena - Former US Men's National Team Coach, World Cup 2002 & 2006. Skip Thorp - Goalkeeping Coach. Bob Bradley - US Men's National Team Coach. Dan Freigang, Ph.D. - Psychology John Hackworth - Ass. USMNT & US Soccer Developmental Academies. Pierre Barrieu - US Men's National Team Fitness Coach. Sumil Gulati - USSF President. The course combined both classroom(theory) and field(practical) sessions, topics included speed of play, team low pressure, offside tactics - attacking & defending and goalkeeping - dealing with through balls. During the week we observed three US MNT training workouts and interacted with the ongoing "A" License candidates. Our instructors also gave our group a World Cup game scenario. The Audit candidates were split in two and represented the nations of Germany and the Faroe Islands. Our objectives were to deliver a training session and prepare the respective teams to play two fixtures, home and away. Towards the end of the week, the training sessions and tactical games were analyzed in the classroom by our instructors and fellow candidates. Overall, the US National Audit Course curriculum was refreshing, the Home Depot Center facilities were of excellent standard and many new friendships were formed in the quest for improving one's soccer knowledge in what they call " the beautiful game."
